I was just diagnosed w/ high blood pressure two weeks ago. Talk about freaking out! Like you, I am waiting for the stroke or heart attack. I'm afraid to exercise, or exert myself in any way. I really need this now, especially when my anxiety is rearing its ugly head again.
My pressure has always been normal, and I'm only 38yrs old. I read that certain medications can cause the high blood pressure. I am currently on Effexor XR which has a tendency to raise your blood pressure, but the "experts" state that it only happens when taking high doses (300mgs). I was on 75mgs. and am now weaning myself off (currently down to 37.5 mgs) My psych doesn't feel that the meds are the cause because of the low dosage I am taking, but I am not convinced. My mom's pressure increased while taking Effexor and she is already on BP meds and her pressure increased anyway. I have read that other people on low doses have had an increase in their pressure. It is also very coincidental that everyone's readings are approximately the same 140/90.
I am slowly coming off the meds because I need to know if that is what is causing the increase. If not, fortunately there is medication that will bring your pressure down. Although I feel I am too young to have to take BP meds for the rest of my life, better safe than sorry.
I don't know if you are currently taking any medication for your anxiety, but I suggest you check into further. You may have been nervous when your pressure was taken. Many people experience the "white coat syndrome" while at the doctor.
Hope I was of some help to you.
