Question about fainting

Hi. I have never fainted with an attack either...and I am no expert, but I my experience may help to shed light on yours. Before I knew I was having 'panic ' attacks I began to have an attack and called 911. At the time my symptoms were dizzyness, shortness of breath, tingling, chest pain...stomach/bowel discomfort and feeling like I was going to faint. I laid down because I was so certain I was going to faint. When the paramedics arrived they took my bloodpressure and pulse and found that my blood pressure had dropped to a point where I would have fainted possibly had I not laid down. It was after this attack that I was diagnosed by my doctor... and what he told me was that the fear and symtoms you feel during your attack can begin to put you into shock, which might thus lower the blood pressure and induce the fainting/lightheaded feeling. I dont know if that helps you or not, but that was my experience. Good luck... and remember your not alone.

I guess it would be more like falling asleep. The first time it happened it cought me by surprise however, I wasn't standing up. When I have an attack I first start walking around really fast until I hyperventilate. Then I sit down because I get light headed. While sitting I try to get my breathing slowed down. That's when my hands are really stiff and I start to feel my mouth tingling. Right after that I pass out. It doesn't always happen though. If I can remove myself from the situation then I calm down before it gets to that point. For example if I'm in the car and I'm just trying to hold it together until I get home, that's when it happens. Like I said after I come to, which according to wittnesses it's only about a minute or so later,I feel fine. I am however, always overcome with emotions and I start crying.

Hi Loana. I guess never say never, huh? What you are describing is extremely rare. Panic attacks rarely end in people passing out. You should probably talk to your doctor about your experience to find out if you have two separate problems, a panic problem and a fainting problem. Your doctor will probably want to know in detail what you mean by "pass out", such as do you mean that you get really exhausted and fall asleep or do you faint away? Have you ever hurt yourself? For instance, has your fainting ever caught you by surprise so that you have fallen and hurt yourself when you pass out? If there is any good news it is that it sounds like you seem to see it coming and have time to prepare. Sometimes you see a fear reaction like this in small kids when they get really frightened or overwhelmed by an experience, they get really really tense, and then they just kind of shut down, but it looks a lot more like falling asleep than fainting away. Adults most often faint when they have a blood (or injury/needle) kind of phobia. I've seem only a couple of these in the hospital over the years. Hopefully somebody in the support group can relate, but this kind of problem is pretty rare. The bottom line is that you should discuss this issue in-depth with your doctor. -- Anne-Marie, Site Administrator

Hi Ioana, I personally don't faint when I have panic attacks, but on several occasions I'm sure I've come fairly close. A friend of mine who has social phobia, IBS and various other bits and bobs used to faint every few weeks when he had an attack. Once he collapsed into my arms - scared the **** out of me!! He's a lot better now since he's put on some weight and is generally more stable. I think this thing about you can't faint when you have a panic attack is a myth, just like panic attacks last 10 to 30 minutes. Well maybe they do most of the time for most of the people, but there are definitely exceptions! Marianne

Hi Trish, I'm with you on the lavender. When I have an attack that I can't control in any other way the last resort (before calling an ambulance...) is having a very hot, very long bath with loads of lavender essential oil. Also, a friend showed me a very good trick for travelling. Take a bottle of lavender essential oil with you and put some drops on the pillow. It gives you this instant feeling of being at home rather than in a strange room. Marianne

Loana In march of this year i was diagnosed with anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, numerous phobias and panic attacks. When a anxiety attack or a panic attack comes on i can feel it and you have 2 choices either fight it and lose or let it flight. i know it's easier said than done but i have learned in my 5 months that when i feel it comming no matter how hard it is i just go lay down, close my eyes and start slow deep breaths in through the nose and out the mouth. another thing that has helped me is i got some inscence sticks. jasmine really helps. i also got lavender bubble bath, lavender soap and lavender after shower spray. I don't know what it is about lavender but for people like us with anxiety it will help. when i was first told this i told that person they were crazy but i guess i was the crazy one cause i tried it and it worked. i just soaked in lavender for about 20 minutes and it worked there were times i was taking 2 and 3 baths a day just to have some peace of mind. good luck to you and god bless you in every step you take. trisha54@cox-internet.com

The program keeps saying about the fear of fainting. The program says that you cannot faint and that it is phisically impossible to do that. Well, I faint everytime I have a panic attack. Granted it happens pretty much at the end of the attack, or rather that is what ends it. I hyperventilate and after it gets really bad instead of just slowly calming down I just pass out and then when I wake up I'm fine. So I am wondering is there some actual medical reason for my panic or am I just different or is it that my body just gets tired of dealing with it so it shuts down?
