This site really has been great for me. I am sure everyone utilizes it differently but I am logging on when I feel the urge to smoke and it helps me get through the tough times. Today has been a great day for me. I took my daughter on a long bike ride( her in the carrier behind me) and was going up hill and just said out loud "I feel amazing today!" It was a great feeling and I know it is because I am not smoking. My husband called me later on this morning and said he was having a hard time today-he has also quit smoking and we talked through it and hopefully he is feeling better as well. So I am saying NOPE today, feeling great that I am 9 days free of cigs and appreciative for this site and all the great people on here.

I too understand exactly what you mean. I was lucky never to have had any physical cravings to smoke, however, mentally I found my world a very different place without cigarettes in it. I felt like a void had opened that cigarettes must have filled before. My whole world revolved around cigarettes- I had to make time, find places, find the money etc to feed the habit, and letting this go was somewhat scary. I also felt that cigarettes had been my 'crutch' in times of need and in times of happiness and I was also wary of letting that go too.

But as Rock says, we adjust our behaviours and habits to compensate and life does exist beyond smoking and it is much much better.

But Sfree, thats what I mean by always come here and share, and you'll find, like today with this post that hey you're not alone feeling this way and we understand-you are doing so great already keep on doing what you're doing.

At the beginning it really does take time to change into your new role as a non smoker. Habits do form over time and when we stop smoking something feels a little off. You had spent so much time smoking everyday in your past, and now 8 days ago you said goodbye. It's going to take time for that to feel ok. The best way to handle the situation is to take it one day at a time. You became associated with smoking over many years and so when you quit it does need time to be once again associated with the feeling of being a non smoker. But remember you were a kid for many years before and needing a cigarette was never an issue. You will go back to that but it does takes time and effort. But I've never met anyone on this site or in my life that felt it was not worth going for. You can do it! Ron

Congratulations on 9 days smoke free! I actually wrote a "dear john" letter back on 12/31 saying goodbye to cigarettes. I've seen other folks here write a similar letter. It was closure I needed when I finally realized that I was never going to smoke again. I remember the first time I drove back home not smoking. 3 hours in a car. I couldn't drive without a cigarette. I would go through 1/2 a pack or more driving the 3 hours home. But I survived! I could actually keep my eyes on the road instead of trying to light a cigarette every 15 minutes or so! Thats the funny thing, so many things in our lives are based around smoking, especially when you have smoked for a while. Just imagine that fruity drink at the lake this weekend, but now imagine being able to taking in all of the smells of the outdoors without the stink of a cigarette! Get out there and smell the roses. Trust me, they smell WONDERFUL!

I felt pretty much the same as I recall. The intial euphoria of giving up is past and the day-to-day reality of what you have done sets in. This is probably why I always struggled in previous quits to get passed day 10.

Well sfree, if you tough it out, it will get easier as time passes. I cannot give you a timeline because each quit is different but I can tell you it will. Try not to dwell on the future, live out each day one day at a time and your new world will slowly unfold in front of you.

You have made the right decision, stick with it.
