Members, What is GERD you ask? And how does it relate to Panic and Anxiety? Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) Gastric Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a condition of irritation and/or inflammation of the lining of the esophagus due to reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus (Kevin Pho M.D). How does GERD associate with Panic and Anxiety? Patients with GERD can have several symptoms including shortness of breath, which can also be a symptom of panic or anxiety. Individuals with GERD have acid in their esophagus that can cause narrowing of the airways in their lungs. Therefore, causing shortness of breath. It is important to emphasize that there are other causes of breathlessness before attributing this symptom to GERD. Therefore, it is wise to consult your doctor before relating these symptoms to GERD, anxiety or panic. Hope this helps :) Melanie __________________________________ The Panic Center Support Group **Information obtained by: Kevin Pho M.D certified in Internal Medicine. I think I have it. I've been feeling more nauseous than ever recently ( I have vomit phobia so I feel nauseous a lot anyway, also my panic attacks make me nauseous) But I have had burning pains and acid reflux and the constant feeling like I need to burp but can't. I've spoken on my support group for others with my phobia and two of them have it also. It's awful and really makes my phobia worse. I'm sure it's a product of 16 years of anxiety. I also get constant recurring bladder infections. Have done for the last 6 years. I never seem to be free of them. Just horrid! Isn't it just wonderful how anxiety can make you feel so physically ill?! Not!

I have it! They did an upper gi a couple of months ago and found it along with a small hernia. They say the two go hand and hand together. They also told me it will most definantly cause chest pain and discomfort. So everytime I do get the chest pain, I tell myself it is my gut, not my heart!

Outlaw, I have GERD from being stressed out for many years. My experiences as a Shipping Supervisor and Department Managers left me with an irratic eating/not getting to eat schedule. I also attribute a lot to "take out" diets. The constant stress, pressure to meet a never-ending list of deadlines and trying to digest my food, left my stomach tied in knots and I had to have my gallbladder removed because of gallstones the size of marbles. Even during my recovery I was stressed, from the fear of my paperwork and outgoing reports backing up. No wonder I also have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Interstitial Cystitis of the bladder. Even your bowels have a schedule and if it is constantly varied, believe me, it will revolt and go on strike. So yes, I have GERD and take 40mg Nexium and I have an appt to see a Gastrointerologist in Feb. So no, your GERD will not go away on its' own if there is already damage to your stomach or esophagus. I hope this answers your questions. Della
