I also used (still do) Chantix. The first time I tried it, I stopped taking it after a month and I relapsed back to smoking. Second time, I quit (July 20) and have stayed on Chantix and have NOT SMOKED! Yeah!
Here is what the drug does for me: 1) it relaxes me and takes the edginess away (not surprising as it is a derivative of the anti-depressant Welbutrin. 2) makes cigarettes taste horrible (which helps me) 3) I am sleeping well, but having lots of dreams 3) it reduces my desire for alcohol (used to love wine, but have slowed down alot) When I do drink, I have strange dreams and sleep poorly.
I have not stopped so I can't comment on withdrawal problems. I do plan to continue Chantix until I feel completely in the clear. I think that will be several months. I have previously taken Welbutrin and had no bad effects, so I expect the same for Chantix.
Overall, Chantix has been very good. I had tried hypnosis and gum and patches, but this is the first time I have felt like I am finally breaking free from cigarettes! And I have smoked my whole adult life!
So, good luck. Did you ask your doctor about slowly reducing your Chantix dosage? This is usually the best way to get off of anti-depressant meds.
I started my quit by using Chantix. I really didn't have a lot of side effects...little nauseas. I was only on chantix for 2 weeks. The first week I was still smoking and then quit the second week. Then I decided I didn't need chantix anymore. I thought if I do find out I do I can go back to taking it. But I like not taking meds...any meds make me nervous. Pretty funny since I would smoke cancer sticks for years but don't like taking meds. I have noticed since I went off the Chantix, it seems a little harder but I am still doing good. So Chantix really helped me the first week or so when I really need it most.
One thing that was strange, right when I stopped taking Chantix my shoulder started hurting...painful and I didn't do anything to make it hurt. That has since gone away but I have read others talking about neck and joint pain? Don't know if that had anything to do with it or not.

I have been telling everyone about Chantix. I can not believe how easy this has been thus far!!! I do experience nausea if I do not eat before taking pill, I am not getting restful sleep along with the vivid, weird dreams. I will take this all over continuing to smoke. I have been taking "mini breaks",reading a health magazine, sipping on herbal teas and taking deep breaths, visualizing the breath penetrating the depths of the lungs and pushing the crud out.
Once again, Chantix has been a miracle for me!!!
I'm new to the support groups so hello everyone! I've been taking the Chantix for 4 1/2 weeks now and I am absolutely amazed! I quit 1 1/2 weeks into it because the cigs didn't have any affect anymore. It just seemed silly to keep smoking them. I definintely felt extremely tired the first week or so but I think that was just nicotine withdrawal. Now I feel better than I ever have! Still emotional but honestly - I've always been emotional and easily stressed out. That's probably why I smoked. I've tried several times to quit before - tried everything - patches (more than once), hypnosis, auricular therapy, cold turkey, wellbutrin - nothing ever worked for long. This has been by far the best quit yet, and I am SO ready for it!
Anyway, gotta' run - just wanted to put my two cents in for the Chantix. Keep up the good work and we'll beat this crazy addiction together!
P.S. Can't figure out how to display my stats on posts...

Hello All,
I am a new Chantix user and I have been bless with no side affects. It has been a great drug for me and thus far. I have try Zyban on prior attempts and had the effects of bad dreams and dry mouth. I feel certain this time with Chantix and the many lessons learn from my fail attempts before I will be able to stay smoke free.

I have nothing but good things to so about this amazing drug. I have had a bit of a upset stomach at times well being on it. Felt like I was going to vomit once but mostly been with the other end.. And the dreams have been great except one. But I have been dealing with a lot of crap in my life that would have sent me over the edge a long time ago but absoulutly no urge to smoke I can't beleive it.

Bad Side affects:
I Wake up tired in the morning
Feel like I am living in a dream world
Some nights I get up in the middle of the night to urinate then cant get back to sleep. It helps if I take my second dose before dinner.
Find myself grinding my teeth more than normal
Getting impatient, I want to stop taking the Chantix so I can forget I ever smoked.
Good side affects:
People at work seem to find me less stressful and easier to talk to ;)
I dont have to nibble on snacks anymore.
I can't remember the last time I had a craving.

ImaWriter,
Do take the time to consult your pharmacist or physician so that they may assist you in finding the best dose for you.
