I really do have a choice, I could keep smoking and be on oxygen in a few short years. Lots of smokers can't seem to quit. It is so sad. I have read stories about people exploding their oxygen tanks. Everything is not so doom and gloom for me. My father-in-law was dx'd with the big E about 35 years ago and he is 73 and doing fine. He gets a little bit winded but I think that isn't so bad. I probably won't be that lucky because it effects woman harder and I think I am being dx'd a little bit later in the game than him but I am going to keep active and hope for the best. They say in most cases once you quit smoking the rate of decline goes back to that of a normal person. But the damage has been done and nothing can undo it except a transplant. That is why everyone of us really needs to quit and stay that way. I no more so than anyone else contemplating or quit. The big E can develop years after you quit you just never know. No cigarette is a safe cigarette. The flip side of this is that my diagnosis has been instrumental in getting at least two other people in my family to quit. My son & step-son are both now about a month quit. My step-son even told me last weekend that I was his inspiration. I love it! Once my life settles down a bit more I plan to be a little more active on this board with the newbies. Work has been very busy and the next three weeks of social stuff is gonna be crazy. Thank you all for your well wishes! I love this board! I have been diagnosed with emphysema. That's why I have quit. I have never had bouts of asthma or bronchitis. I am basically cough free with no symptoms, just a little shortness of breath when in smoggy or smokey situations. A cat scan for something else turned up the emphysema so I guess in that respect I am lucky that I am aware of it and I didn't just keep smoking and do more damage. I don't know what the future has in store for me, but who does? Anyone of us could have cellular changes at this time in any part of our body that could be our end? Who really is guaranteed anything from life? I just feel somewhat guilty that I was born with a healthy set of lungs and look what I did to them. Think of the kids with cystic fibrosis?--Not even given a chance. Just be thankful for every day and never take anything for granted. I quit for 3 years and just started up again for a few months before I was diagnosed so the doctor said that this lastest short jag of smoking wasn't what caused the damage and I have had this for awhile and wasn't aware of it. It is so sad. There is not much worse than seeing someone with oxygen struggling for every breath. What is so aweful is that the lungs and take in air....but they can't release it. For an example: They say....try taking in a relatively sizable amount of air...then only exhale a very little...but breath in again. I read it is an aweful feeling. Like sufficating in reverse. None of us deserve that. Stay quit no matter what Mercy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 216 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,320 Amount Saved: $965.52 Life Gained: Days: 28 Hrs: 10 Mins: 2 Seconds: 40

Stickin, The statistics widely vary as it largely is based on an individual basis. It depends on factors such as, genetic risk factors, environmental exposure, current health, how long you've smoked, how much, if you've quit and for how long. Danielle, Bilingual Support Specialist
