This may sound crazy, but I have a friend who quit 20 years ago, and he still has cravings. He just chooses not to smoke. He also feels a lot better, he smells good, too. His life is better. He wouldn't pick up one of those little killing sticks for anything! What's a little craving when you have so much to be thankful for? I'm pretty new at this and it's still hard, but every day is one 24 hour period where I get to make the choices, not the tobacco companies. I give myself that power and it makes the cravings a little less important most days. Tryagain, Of course you can smoke if you want to. You choose not to. Everyday, you get up and decide no smoking today. Don't be envious of your husband and certainly don't diminish the choice you've made for yourself. Nobody made you quit and kept you that way. It was all you! All your hard work! It's time to look forward to better things. Give yourself better alternatives! Also be sure to start getting ready for that last step down. Until nicotine is out of your system completely, your body is going to scream for it. We are cheering you on! You can get through this! Danielle ____________________ The SSC Support Team

Tryagain! I feel so bad that we are unable to help you. It shouldn't have to be so hard. But don't you see that the anger is futile. It isn't going to make your quit any easier, it isn't going to help your health, your quit is doing that. Can you find a way to work through the anger and release it? What about writing all your feelings down on paper and when you're finished it all, rip it up or burn the papers as a release to let go of it all. Keeping all of that inside cannot be good for your health either. Its worth a try! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 101 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,525 Amount Saved: $1,065.55 Life Gained: Days: 12 Hrs: 9 Mins: 4 Seconds: 52

That makes sense to me now. If you don't want to quit, you will always struggle and dare I say it, the outcome is inevitable unless you can change your thinking. Congratulations for getting as far as you have considering the circumstances. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Butterfly Swimmer, I n v u! I'm still hanging in there. Still no cigs but I have now identified the source of my still having such intense cravings. I just don't want to quit and I am monumentally angry and resentful that I have and was forced to by some health problems. I got reinforcement from my dentist who found something not quite right in my mouth and I have to go back after some treatment to see if it might be precancer, probably from years of smoking. Hopefully it's just some irritation caused by something else. Excessive gum chewing perhaps. I simply cannot be positive about this quit, I'm trying, but I just can't. That's the bottom line. My husband has started occasionally sneaking a cigarette. Not around me, but I can smell it on him and it makes me furious that he can smoke and I can't. This is probably why I've been hanging on to the NRT long past the time I should have stopped. I can't stop being mad at the world. Pen, Maybe I wasn't clear in what I was saying. In my post, I differentiated between cravings and smoking thoughts and defined "cravings" as "long-lasting intense desires to smoke" and smoking thoughts as the quick passing thoughts that occur and then are gone almost immediately. I believe that you do not have those long-lasting intense desures to smoke, correct? But rather do have the occasional smoking thoughts, right? If I'm wrong, then please correct me, but that's what I understood you to be saying. Crave the Quit! Small point of clarification required here. Neither Anna nor I said that we are free of cravings. In fact Anna said that sometimes she fancies a cigarette but quickly comes to her senses!! I still have the occasional trigger even after over 3 years quit. In both instances, we dismiss the incident very much in line with the sentiment of katy's response here; they happen, we acknowledge them, we give them little time and we move on. We continue to turn negatives into positives as we move smoothly through our quits. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/18/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 1122 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 22,440 Amount Saved: 5,610.00 Life Gained: Days: 180 Hrs: 5 Mins: 8 Seconds: 20

Tryagain, did the person who'd been quit for 18 years not have ANY cigarettes in that time? I've known MANY people who "say" that they quit smoking several years earlier, but either are still on NRTs, have had multiple "slips" or they still continue to smoke every once in a while but call themselves quit. I would bet that she's probably had some nicotine in the last 18 years... and if not, then she's REALLY atypical. That just doesn't happen very often. When I first quit and heard of people who'd quit smoking 5, 10 or 20 years prior that still had "cravings," I got REALLY scared! I thought "I'M GOING TO FEEL LIKE THIS FOREVER?!?!" I'm here to say, "No, you won't!" I had a difficult quit. I was having cravings or smoking thoughts (or whatever you want to call them) virtually every day for the first 10 months. Now granted, I had 3 slips in the first 4 months of my quit, so really, I was at like 6 months when I stopped having cravings every day or virtually every day. But, as Penitent and Anna demonstrated, you CAN be free of cravings much sooner than that. The biggest thing to keep in mind is... and I really, really, really want you to take this to heart... and that is, everybody's quit is different. Some might stop craving everyday after the first month... others may crave for the rest of their lives. I don't believe that either of these are typical. Most people do have smoking thoughts for several months after quitting, but they don't last forever. They say that it takes 12-18 months to be completely free of the cravings. I honestly believe that. Do I crave now? No. Do I have smoking thoughts? Yes. What's the difference, you ask? The difference (in my opinion) is that cravings are long-lasting intense desires to smoke. Cravings are what we had in the beginning where the thoughts just wouldn't go away! You'd get the thought out of your head for a minute, and then it'd be back and would last for 10! Smoking thoughts are like "it'd be nice to have a cigarette right now" and as soon as I complete that thought, it's gone and doesn't return. Does that happen often? Well, I don't know what you'd call often, but it does happen a few times a week. Cravings or strong, intense desires to smoke happen every few months, and I assume that they will just continue getting more and more rare the longer I am quit. I think the last one I had was about 3 months ago and lasted for about 3 or 4 days. Tryagain, I would be interested in knowing more about this person's "cravings" and whether or not they are really cravings at all, or are just smoking thoughts. And if they are cravings that last for hours or even days, I'd be interested to know how often they happen and if she's had any nicotine at all since then. I bet if you were to investigate this further, you'd find that there's probably more to the story. And even if she does have cravings every day and hasn't had nicotine, that doesn't mean that you will! Even if you're having a difficult quit, you probably won't crave forever! I'm living proof of that! Cravings just don't happen for me anymore. Hold on to the truth that it WILL get better with time! It does! I promise! Crave the Quit! Just got some cold water thrown over my head! One of my customers just left, she has not had a cig for 18 YEARS and still has cravings! She said that if they weren't so unhealthy she'd light up right now. Like myself, she had to quit for health reasons. Although when I did quit and did so for three years, I did not have any cravings at all. That's what I'm hanging my hat on, that they did go away completely. Waiting, waiting, waiting.
