IBS and Panic Disorder.

for 20 år siden 0 9 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Yes, I also have IBS, and it complicated by "shy bowel" syndrome. Meaning I can't use the bathroom w/o anxiety. Its a terrible thing to have. My gut is always upset about something it seems. I feel completely alone with my bathroom phobia and the IBS makes it worse. Gosh what a freakin' mess I am sometimes. I'm not new to any of this and am eagerly gleaning as much info as I can. I've been busy having babies for so many years that I didn't have time to deal with much, but now with the death of my oldest boy (8 months ago) I'm being forced to slow-down, yet now all my fears and anxieties and surfacing....again, including the IBS.

I have never had IBS but in the last 3 weeks been feeling constipated and stomach pains....Im sure its due to anxiety but I think its the low dose of prozac(7.5mg) that is making it worse - ie causes more anxiety at first? Also, do you think peanut butter causes constipation - ie I started spreading it on my morning bagel due to no cholesterol? Im not sure if I need to lower the prozac OR if its just the anxiety itself or the peanut butter causing all this????/

Blondie, You have come to the right place! Please feel free to roam the site at your own pace. If you look to the left of the screen under "TOOLS" you will find many supportive tests. These tests are not diagnostic tools and are not a replacement or substitute for a physician's advice. The purpose of these tests is to prepare you with information that you can present to your physician. When you're finished the test, you can either print your Final Report or email it directly to your doctor. We also have developed a Panic Program. This program is 12-weeks and involves the tools mentioned above. Each session is based on the previous session, so we strongly advise that you work slowly through the program and not jump ahead. If you have any question or concerns with our €œTOOLS€, you can contact us at support@paniccenter.net. We are the Support Specialist for The Panic Center and are open to any questions or concerns you may have. Looking forward to hearing from you soon! Josie

Hi Just joined this forum and am sooooo glad I'm not alone in the IBS thing. Today I was in the supermarket I got to the counter and the place was real crowded(I try to face my fears), I went to pay but had to hand the cash over and leave my shopping and change with a huge que behind me and run to the toilet. It was so embarassing I really don't wanna go anywhere again. :(

I have IBS, too. Not fun. Before I started on anti-anxiety meds, I would have to run to the bathroom almost every time I went out, several times. Mine is gas, bloating, diahrea, and constipation. I take Bentyl when it starts flaring up, and for accute attacks, I keep Immodium in my purse at all times!

Thanks Guys! You have all been great in responding to my question about IBS, thank you :) My biggggest fear of returning to work was my symptoms of IBS. When my stomich gets upset I have other symptoms like dizziness, or off balance feeling and weakness. But so far so good! I'm feeling real good about being out in the world again. Scared but good. I'm taking one day at a time and I'm really focusing on my thinking pattern. My self confidence is coming back slowly. My doctor gave me some medication for my stomich symptoms. I've taken it off and on for years. I sould probably take it more regular but I'm not one for taking alot of meds. I also have a spastic dueldenum (?) and have had dueldenal ulcers in the past. The dueldenum is the opening into your bowel from your small intestines. The medication is called Ranitidine. I honestly don't know if it's worth taking all the time. Has anyone been on, or heared of this medication? Another thing I would like to add to our disscussion is that you are correct about what not to eat and I would also like to add grape juice and nuts to your list. Dairy products are a NO NO! I will take your advice about eating more fiber....Yuck!!! Any suggestions on what might taste good that's high in fiber? I'd love to hear any suggestions. You all are great, Thanks! Big Hugs :) Lisa

Lisa, I have IBS too. The symptoms of IBS are the reason I was finally diagnosed with panic and anxiety disorder. My symptoms were really bad and I couldn't leave home without having to go to the bathroom, so I stayed home alot too. I convinced myself I had colon cancer and ended up having a colonoscopy which came back normal, it was at that time that the doctors confimred it was my nerves causing all of these symptoms. Taking Zoloft has really helped my symptoms and also adding bran to your diet may help too. Eat lots of fiber and try to avoid alcohol, dairy products, coffee and greasy foods.

although mislabeled a laxative...metamucil does not have the affects of one. it is for people with constipation or diarrhea...both bowel iregularities....and helps make you regular...and helps get rid of the feeling that there is more that needs to come out (incomplete evacuation.

Funny Taz....I was thinking the same thing. I would have thought Metamucil would have made things MORE runny...(sorry for the graphics). Not to worry Susanne, I don't take this. I have wonderful enemas that I give to myself regularly for U.C. Gosh, I wouldn't want to miss all that fun for Metamucil! Cheers, Danielle

Hello Taz, Its active ingredient is psyllium husk, a natural plant fiber with a high percentage of soluble fiber. The fiber absorbs water and softens and adds bulk to stools for easier elimination. It therefore in some cases can eliminate diarrhea by adding bulk to stool. Before taking any over the counter medications you should consult your Doctor first. They will be able to decide what is best for you and your situation. Susanne
