Hard, Harder & Hardest

Hi Gismo, I'm having a tough time too. The thoughts of smoking and battling the cravings seems all consuming and wear me out a bit. I've done a mile on the treadmill today, went to the gym, got my haircut, and still.....I'm sitting here, writing this post, thinking how much I'd like a smoke. I'm not going to smoke one, but I can't get the thoughts out of my head. I read everybody's posts and that helps. Hang tough, you're doing great. As everybody says, this too shall pass, with time. Hi Gismo - Sorry to hear about your bypass surgery. I'm glad you're feeling better but, maybe I missed an earlier post but I'm curious, did you keep smoking after the surgery? I had a friend who went through heart surgery a few years ago and it scared him straight. He had a heart attack, surgery and came out of it OK. He never once touched, or craved another cigarette again. I guess the trauma of watching his life pass before his eyes and then getting a second chance on life changed everything for him. He is a different person. I'm amazed that other smokers bother you. I just quit again, about 10 days ago, and hung out with some other smoker friends this past week. It really didn't bother me too much. I pity them, actually. I made a commitment to quit and that's it. Until you come to terms with that, you'll never get over that hump of being obsessed with it. Try to let it go a little everyday. I think all of us think about cigarettes everyday, that's why we're here. It's OK, though. They're thoughts, not cravings. You don't have a long way to go because you're already there! You're a non-smoker just like the rest of us. Don't be afraid to think about smoking. It was such a big part of our lives, how could we NOT think about it. Relax and try to celebrate your quit and don't get too worked up about what others are doing. -- 2tone My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/26/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 10 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 303 Amount Saved: $55 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 18 Mins: 48 Seconds: 46

    Cigarettes Not Smoked

2tone, I did stop smoking for two months after my surgery. I know its crazy but I was thinking like an addict not rationally. The surgery should have scared the sh... out of me. I had an argument with my hubby and had left the half empty pack in a drawer. Needless to say I reached for the cigs. Now I know better. There are no cigs in my house now! I'm going to try and focus on myself instead of the smokers. I went out to dinner this evening and feel much better. Thanks to all of you for your support. I'll keep you posted. I thought having and raising four children was hard. Facing triple by-pass surgery (last year) was harder. It was a little scary. I knew I wouldn't know what was happening and if I woke up I'd probably be just fine. This, by far, has to be the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. You are aware of it every minute of the day and night. You can't turn it off. It's amazing how much it can consume ones life. Everywhere I go I see people smoking. On the street or when I'm driving I notice if the car next to me has someone who's smoking (I never noticed before or I just didn't care). I keep repeating I'm an ex-smoker now. I know I have a long way to go. Just wondering if and when you actually stop thinking about it. I hope its soon. The cravings are not really that bad. I seem to be able to handle them. I just would like to think about something other than cigs. I keep going to the posts and it does pass the time and give wonderful advice. Any advice from you long time non-smokers? Gismo: They call it Hell Week for a reason, you know! It would seem you've discovered that now. It does seem as though smoking and cigarettes are the ONLY possible thoughts you can have, but it's not true. You are thinking of other things, especially when you take the time to focus on something else, something pleasant. I'm not a long-time quitter -- 90 days tomorrow, but I smoked for 35 years and quit many times. With this last and final quit (I KNOW this to be true), I was and am still able to look at smoking for what it really is, what it has taken from me, and what I refuse to let it continue to take. When you watch someone smoke, step back and really look at them. Do not allow the addiction to dictate the language in your head ("oh, that looks so good", "I sure wish I could have a smoke", etc. Switch the language to "wow, he/she sure looks sad and pathetic smoking". "It stinks so bad." "That smoker doesn't look like a happy smoker at all". "That smoker wishes he was me -- a non-smoker." Then review all your wonderful reasons for quitting. Then celebrate your success. It's simple really -- just don't smoke. NOPE -- Not One Puff Ever Keep the faith -- and KEEP YOUR QUIT!

Hi Gismo - I remember i point where I got really tired of my life revolving around "not smoking". I remember that one of the best days was when I forgot about my "patch" until very late in the day because I didn't think about smoking. Some people have easy quits...some have hard quits (I think maybe I was somewhere in between). Actually, before Christmas I got a little down about the weight that I have gained....but I decided that I needed to do something about it. Now, for the first time in my life, I am really working on exercising regularly and eating healthy.... I am just getting started BUT the great thing is that when I spend my time and energy focussing on something else (i.e. diet and exercise), I spend less time thinking about smoking. As a non-smoker, you will have many new opportunities - choose some new healthier interests and enjoy your new life....and don't worry when the bad days come...they will pass...and things will get better and better. Gismo, its very hard at the start, your brain is consumed with the thoughts of smoking. It will last for a while and the thoughts will diminish a little day by day. Soon you will realize that you havent thought about smoking for an hour, and then two and so on. It will bring a smile to your face....especially after going through hell week! Gismo, Just as your fellow quitters have said, it begins to diminish with time. Until then, if you're tired of thinking about it, find a great distraction that will keep your mind occupied. An outing, a computer game, a task, a hobby... Keep persevering! Hell week is almost over, start planning your reward! Danielle ______________________ The SSC Support Team

Marg, Somedays all we can do is take it one hour at a time. They don't call it hell week for nothing, that's for sure! You're doing beautifully. 5 days already! Keep distracting yourself and be sure to have an evening of R&R. You deserve a little pampering! Danielle ______________________ The SSC Support Team
