Bad Friend???

Hang in there Pink and take solace in knowing that we've all be right where you are right now. Your real friends (regardless if they smoke or not) will want to see you succeed. So talk to them. My smoking friends were more than happy to not smoke around me in enclosed areas. The ones that were not willing to do so, I stayed away from them until I felt strong in my resolve. I explained to them that it was nothing personal, but that I had to do that for a little while so that I could 'get better'. 4 months later (not a long time), life is back to normal and I can hang out with smokers, non smokers, etc. I can drink and not think of smoking. Personally, I don't like being in enclosed smoking areas anymore ... why did I quit to continue inhaling smoke? I didn't. But other people that have quit, seem to not mind. We are all different. Regardless, know that you will come out on the other side of all this. But for right now while your quit is still a baby ... be patient with yourself. This will all pass and one day pretty soon you are going to look back at this phase of your quit and go 'WOW! This Non Smoking life ROCKS! I'm glad I hung in there!' Talking on the phone was a trigger for me as well. I replaced smoking on the phone with eating popcorn while on the phone, then a mint, now nothing. I liked to help my disassociations along. Makes the trigger go away faster imo. Pinktexas, Take your time, you'll get back into routine soon. Take good care of yourself. You could try a cordless headset? You can talk, keep busy and not be tempted to smoke. Danielle _____________________ The SSC Support Team

Pinktexas, Many have felt just as you do now. It's normal to go through a patch of sadness and it generally is temporary. You don't have to give up your friends but some members do find it helpful to stay away from smokers until they are more secure in their quit. Until that day comes, try branching out and try new things. Enroll in a class, explore new places in your community. This will open up a new world of opportunities and you may make some friendships with non-smokers along the way. Stay strong. Danielle _____________________ The SSC Support Team

Hi pinktexas - This is a time to trust your intuition, trust your instincts. You definitely know what you need more than anyone else does right now, so trust yourself, dear one. I know that for me (and we are all different) being around a smoker (friend or not) would not have been a good thing for me at the beginning of my Quit. Stay focused on YOU ~ on how you are feeling, and what you need to do for you right now. Stay in the moment as well... Doni't get ahead of yourself. Time can pass very slowly or it can feel like it's ticking away, so stay grounded with yourself and be gentle with yourself right now as you are quite vulnerable. Also - wrap yourself in your own gentle compassion and surround yourself with what you love and with what makes you feel good. There is some amazing wisdom here on this site - take the time to go back and read old posts. Emotions can run high, and we can find that what we need in one moment may not be what we want or need in the next 5 minutes. Just trust yourself right now - and make sure to protect your Quit with everything you have - as it's like a very small child who needs to be loved and cared for moment to moment. In the beginning of my Quit journey, I learned how to take better care of me - I learned to connect w/myself on a more intimate and loving level... So embrace the journey, friend. You will know what you need. Pink - it is a good thing :) Just be very gentle and loving with yourself. Sleeping - yes - is sooo good at times, especially in the beginning of the Quit process. You'll know when you're comfortable moving closer to your friends. In the meantime, the most important thing is protecting your Quit in every way. You are doing great! Make sure to reward yourself - it's important! Ahhhh...(sigh of relief) ha-ha. I guess I am normal after all. I guess the thing that has just bothered me so much and made me feel like a bad friend is that recently I haven't even wanted to talk on the phone. I talk on the phone all day at work it feels like so when I am done and I get my little boy from school lately I just want to take a nap. Talking on the phone was one of the activities that I always did while smoking....the phone would ring...if it was personal I would light up and go out side and have my conversation. Maybe that is part of it. I know it will get better...it is just feeling later than sooner, but that is okay....I will make it!!! Well I must say that today has been so nice to actually get back to work without feeling like a nut case. I talked to one of my friends today that I feel as if I have been neglecting a bit, and I explained to her how I was feeling, and what I needed from her right now so that I ensure "MY" success during this journey. I explained to her how you do not even understand how smoking has controlled your life until you remove it from your daily routine. She said she understands, but I know in my heart she can't completely understand until she quits herself. She went on to tell me that just because my friends smoke doesn't mean they have to smoke around me...I just don't know yet...I know in time the guard that was put up gets lazy and without thinking one of them will offer me a cigarette. Anyway I guess I will run for now. It is funny how I feel so much better after posting here. Maybe it is because I know there will be no judgment, only support and encouragement here. I just want everyone to know how much it helps and how it is appreciated. Cigarettes Not Smoked

One thing is really on my mind today. Over the course of the last 2 weeks, I have been really distant from my good friends. One reason is because I am having to change all my patterns and avoid the things that I associate smoking with in my mind. The second reason is that they all smoke. Since I quit smoking I have come to the realization of several things and feel like a totally different person. I have been so emotional and I cry alot which is not typical of my character at all. I feel as is I almost in a mild depression...and I just feel like being alone. I don't know if this feeling will pass, but it is how I feel right now. I know that I am only 14 days into my quit and I don't know what the future holds. All of the things that I now associate with smoking I see as negative in my life. I don't want to loose my friends, the have helped my through some really hard times this year, but I also don't want to deal with the temptation of smoking. I just really don't know how to deal with this situation. I really miss them, but I don't feel ready to go back to "normal". I guess I am just looking for some guidance from the other "quitters" that are further along in thier journey that mine. Thanks. I am so glad to know that I am not the only one that has felt this way during a quit. I guess you never know how many actions in your life are associated with a bad habit unitl you let it go. And Windy...your post was sooooooo funny. Maybe I should practice too, just incase the situation arises...haha!!! I am just hoping that maybe I can be around my friends soon in small doeses over the next few weeks as things begin to normalize. I think for the past few weeks, well 2 that is...I have been in aviodance mode...trying to hide from anything that would trigger me wanting to smoke. I have been a little sick, I have cried more than I ever have in my whole life....I have slept alot, I mean alot...almost as if I was in a depression. The next two weeks, I am guess I am throwing myself into work...I have to get caught up from the past two weeks...could be a very good thing!!!!
