old timers...?

Gonna I keep thinking about that lady I met at the gym, who told me she smokes one, once in a while, maybe a couple times a year and asked me how come I started again after 1.5 year, well it's because I tested the theory, I smoked one, and here I am 10 years later. So I realise some can do it and I can't, that's that. There's no way around it ,I'm a nicotine addict and just can't touch the poison with a ten foot pole. I took the decision and I'm sticking with it, I want to live longer and healthier. One day at a time :)Marie My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 110 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,657 Amount Saved: $440 Life Gained: Days: 14 Hrs: 13 Mins: 44 Seconds: 0

I have a question. I was talking to two friends that have been long-term quitters. One has been quit for ten years. He said he has not craved a cigarette in over 7 years. He said he had some pretty intense cravings the first 8 months, then an occassional desire after that. Then he said at about two years into his quit he got the urge and smoked a cigarette while drinking. The next morning he said he felt sick and that pretty much 'cured' his desire. I understand the NOPE theory and recognise the risk, but I was just wondering if other long-term quitters have had this happen? Thanks, your message is very timely...I have been toying with that idea for several days now.... Quitting smoking has been the most rewarding and the most depressing and lonely experiences...? Seems I go along very nicely, then---wham---something out of left field not only hits me, but grabs onto my legs and tries to drag me down.... But, I am sick of this quitting process...I have (literally) been going through withdrawels now for 5 months!!! It's time to $hit or get of of the pot.... I AM determined to QUIT! ;) Thank you so much, RDMan...you hit the spot!

Hey, Marie: I have only had a few minutes at the computer over the last two days, so I checked things out but did not log on...work, work, work is about all I have done lately...I have been very stressed about it, too. Still struggling along with my 7 mg (stickless) patches! Sometimes I feel like I am climbing the walls and I have been so ANGRY about every little thing. I had stopped the wellbutrin sometime back, but pulled the bottle back out again. It will probably take a few days to get back on level. I didn't say anything, but this morning I had to leave the kitchen because I thought I would choke my husband for scraping the bottom of his cereal bowl while he was eating. Then at work a co-worker who chews gum all day and blows bubbles is in serious jeopardy and doesn't even know it! ;p Yeah, I need some stress and anger management right about now!

That is interesting...and I agree, it isn't worth the risk. Of course the friend I mentioned earlier also said it was a drunk smoke and the next day he felt so bad but wasn't sure if it was the hang-over alone or combo with smoking...LOL

Zookie: I am glad you posted. I am always curious about the 'successful' quitters and their thoughts. I have come to realize that it does get easier with time, but there seems to be an occasional 'teasing' thought or desire even with the long quits, in most cases. Something I have trouble grasping since I have never made it past three months! I am always reminding myself, this time, to take it one day at a time (my friend Marie, the 12 step guru, constantly reminds us of this!)and she is right. In any event, I hope you pull through this bit of a crave, smoke-free. Don't tempt yourself with that 'one won't hurt' thought---it just may, and you would have thrown away a 450 day quit and be so mad at yourself because of it. Thanks for coming here...we need to know the nicodemon might strike out of left field later on down the road and we need to be prepared for it! BTW, CONGRATULATIONS on the 450 days!!!! That is absolutely awesome! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 23 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,194 Amount Saved: $184 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 10 Mins: 56 Seconds: 20

Thank you Lady and Marie for the words of encouragement. Today is a bit better, I should add. I guess sometimes I am just exhausted from the mental battle of quitting. Stressful situations are so HARD for me---situations that I have no control over worry me to no end and that is when I get that overwhelming desire to smoke. But I won't... Thanks again! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 27 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,373 Amount Saved: $216 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 19 Mins: 47 Seconds: 46

I don't consider myself an old timer. But just the thought of smoking a cigarette makes me feel sick. Gonnadoit, Everyone gets tired, be sure to take time out to be kind to yourself. Remember that you only have control over you & your actions. Glad you're still smoke free! Danielle ______________________ The SSC Support Team
