Started smoking diary and have question

Hey Ozzgran I liked your idea about keeping a photo of the kids around so much I took it a step further. My daughter makes bracellets, ankelets and necklaces out of embroidery for her friends. She takes 3 different colors and braids them together just like you do hair. So anyway, I asked her to make me one using her, her sister's and her brother's favorite colors. I wear it everyday now. Each time I light up I remind myself that life is like those threads, alone they are weak and break easily but bound together they are strong. If I try to go alone with this quit I will be weak and cave in, but together with you and my children I will be strong and I will fight the urge to smoke again. I started my smoking diary this morning, as suggested. It's strange because I notice that I crave a cigarette just about every 60 minutes. Seriously, my first was at 9:15, second was at 10:10, third at 11:12, and so on. I was wondering if maybe there was a medical explaination...like maybe that's how long the nicotine lasts in your system or something? Anyway, the last question on the list "reason for this cigrarette?" reminded me of something a behavioral psychologist told me the first time I quit. What he said was that most of the time a cigarette craving is actually a craving for something else, but your body has adjusted to using nicotine as a solution to all cravings. For example, when you crave a cigarette you may actully be hungry or thirsty, you might even be tired or maybe just bored. So I plan on using that when I quit this time. From now until August 1, I will ask myself if I really need that cigarette or could I replace it with a healthy snack or a drink of water. With 3 kids being tired is a given but a nap is out of the question...and who can sit still long enough to be bored with 3 kids? ;p My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: -23 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: $0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

Twizzler's have been added to the list :) Yoga has also been added...my 7yo told me this morning "yoga really helped when I stopped sucking my thumb" lol So she showed me some of her "yoga moves". I have degenerative disk disease and to be honest it realy helped with that horrible morning pain I get in my back. I also waited one hour before I had that first smoke this morning...which was amazing considering that I normally light up while I'm still in the bed, before my feet hit the floor. I put my 15 cigarettes outside on the porch and will start smoking out there from now on. This suggestion was very important considering that most of my smoking is done when on the computer and I really need to get that out of my head or comming here for support will be difficult. I've been making a list of everyone's suggestions, thank you all for being so supportive :) In a way I wish you were all a bunch of jerks so I could make an excuse for not doing this :eg: My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: -21 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: $0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

Great ideas, thanks guys. I've also began making a list of items to substitute for the cigaretts. This is what I have so far: gum, suckers/lollipops, silly putty, sunflower seeds, coloring book and crayons (my little one's idea lol), raisins and hard candy. Anymore suggestions to the list? I would appreciate it :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: -22 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: $0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

OK I've completed all of Milestone 4: Preparing to quit. I set a quit date for August 1, 2006 and from now until then I pledge to do the following: 1. Reduce my intake. I smoke 20 cigaretts a day (and luckily they did the math for me) so my new reduced total is: 15 cigaretts a day. 2. Not smoke more than 1 cigarette per hour, and I will only smoke 1/2 the cigarette...grabbing the marker as we speak (or type rather lol) 3. Review the My Benefits section of my Glove Box everyday. 4. Review the My Coping Plan section of my Glove Box everyday. 5. Visit the Support Group everyday. I feel more and more nervous as the big day approaches. I talk big now but what happens on August 1st? I want to quit so bad. I think about it every night before I go to bed and every morning when I wake up, coughing my head off from this "smokers cough". Most of all, I want to keep my promise to my daughter that if she quit sucking her thumb I would quit smoking (no thumb for a week now...she already has me beat  ) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: -22 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: $0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0

Tina, Congratulations on your decision to quit smoking! We are all not a bunch of jerks lol we are nice people who have struggled to quit smoking for good. My advice is to read Allen Carr's The Easy Way to Stop Smoking. It worked wonders for me. I never thought I would get this far. I am so proud. Tina, Well done! The planning you are doing in preparation for your quit is admirable! It will certainly pay off on Aug. 1st! Have you thought about testing your coping mechanisms before your quit date arrives? Reaching for those crayons or suckers instead of cigarette once or twice? You'll be able to get an idea if this coping mechanism will be helpful to you or if you need to revise your plan. You're nervousness is totally normal, many quitters felt the same way. Remember we'll all be rallying around to see you through your quit. Start trying to challenge those anxious thoughts with more positive self-talk. Tina Welcome - such a positive pre-start to your quit, well done!! I can recommend keeping a photo of your little ones faces close by - I know you see them all the time but sometimes, when the going gets tough for you and they are in bed/at school, you may need reminding of 3 very good reasons to stay alive for a long, long time to come. i kept my grand daughter's photo close by and I'm so glad I did, it really motivates me to keep on keeping on. Pat (I can't work the quit meter, clueless, so quit date 14.02.06 - 145 days)
