I used to get up and have a smoke and a cig the first thing in the morning. I still love to drink coffee and I don't wan't to give it up. I changed my morning routine to get myself a cup of coffe or my husband do:-) and I lay in bed and drink it. It gives me a feeling of luxury and something I couldn't do with a cig in my hand. I also smoked most of my fags in a morning, it was the first thing I did when I came downstairs. Firstly (long time before I quit) I made sure that I didn't smoke in the house so I had to go into the garage for my morning fix. Then when my quit day came I had to avoid the garage like the plague as I mainly only went in there to smoke. Changing my morning routine helped a lot and in fact did not find the first one in a morning the hardest to do without. Hi mama, I was just pondering the morning smoke this am. It is still the first thing that I think of when I wake up. What do we expect? It was our reason for getting going for 10,20,30 years! So, I have a crave when I first get up and have some coffee..(fresh ground columbian for me, breaking free) but, as I put one foot in front of the other in my morning routine, the thought goes away for a while. Then, I handle the next crave as it comes. Don't even consider smoking when the crave comes. Remember, the crave will go away whether you smoke or not. Success feels so good; defeating the nicodemon one day, one minute at a time...look forward to the freedom in the future and enjoy the freedom that you have today. mama, I just made a post for you called "Mama Wants to Know". True addicts -- as we all are -- must have their fix first thing in the morning. Why? Because you've gone without your drug for all those hours you were asleep and now you're going through withdrawal. So, you smoke and you feel so great. Ahhhh, I feel good...smoking is so pleasurable. HAHA! The joke is on us...smoking is pleasurable because it stops our withdrawal! So we develop this routine...get up, smoke, coffee, sit. How do you get over that? By delaying that first smoke. Just delay it. Get up. Don't smoke. Go do something else for a while. Drink tea instead. Trying taking a shower before you smoke. Brush your teeth before you smoke. Walk outside and breathe before you smoke. Delay it. As with any trigger -- driving, eating, etc. -- if you can do this for a few days, you will break that trigger. Your lizard brain will unlearn that habitual behavior. If you smoke in the car, same thing. Do a few drives without smoking. Your subconscious will get the message after a bit. My husband still smokes. So he does the sit, smoke, coffee, stare routine every morning. While he's sitting, smoking, staring and drinking coffee, I've washed a load of clothes and answered emails and taken a shower. Rusty :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/13/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 530 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 14,852 Amount Saved: $1855 Life Gained: Days: 72 Hrs: 23 Mins: 10 Seconds: 59

Mama, I have welcomed you and your determination in another thread! If you are accustomed to getting up early then do something different. Chores, like laundry or dishes so you don't have to do them later! Perhaps now that the good weather is here a nice walk to start your day. Substitute the morning coffee and smoke for something that you actually like to do. Hope this helps, Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
