Hi DL,
Glad to hear you are doing something good for yourself by taking care of your health! I am a firm believer in healthy diet and lifestyle, after all, our minds and our bodies are not independent of each other, and a healthy body feeds a healthy mind.
Something you may want to try is switching to organic foods. I spent about 6 months eating everything I normally did, same amount, the only change I made was that everything I ate was organic. I lost about 10 pounds (and I didn't even think I had 10 pounds to lose) - and my mood improved. Fell off the wagon after about 6 months, mostly because organic food tends to be a bit more expensive but I still try to eat mostly all natural foods.
And don't worry - organic food isn't all oatmeal and wheatgrass. You can get pretty much all of your favourite, tasty foods in organic form these days. Even if you don't go all organic, you could substitute some of your guilty pleasures with organic versions. Mine was nacho chips and chocolate bars. Lots of all natural foods actually taste better than processed foods because they actually taste like the food they're supposed to be!
The reasoning behind this is that all of the chemicals and additives in food contribute to weight gain and poor health. Our bodies are designed to work perfectly if we just feed them what they need. They don't need all of the stuff on the label that you can't pronounce. So our bodies store this gunk and all this gunk screws up our body chemistry and next thing you know, we're plagued by weight gain and disease.
An excellent book I would recommend is "Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know About" by Kevin Trudeau. You'll never look at food the same way again after reading that book.
You could also consult a natural health practisioner or visit your local health food store. They may be able to make some recommendations tailored to your needs.

...talking about this topic I am wondering if anyone knows, when the sister-site "Healthy Weight Center" will be working?
I check quite often but I can only see: "check back soon.." this site could be very useful for many of us .. so I am really keen on trying it.. thanks.
DL
How can any person even with iron will power even hope to diet when faced with cakes with whipped cream!
I suggest that you bribe your sister to only get the cakes out after you have returned home.
You seem to be able to do things for others before yourself, so, just think that you are doing this for your wife.
You have approx six months before your wife can join you?
Let her be amazed by your transormation into a slimline you.
Do it for her. Although I do suggest you now wait until after Christmas.
I am sure your sister will want to cook up a feast.
Start the new year with a new diet plan and I am sure we will all try to join you.
Its a pity we cant police each other over this site.
Good luck.
Many thanks Danielle,
Going to be tough as my sister has a penchant for specialist bakery cakes with whipped cream and shavings of dark chocolate.... must get my jaw wired shut...
Thanks all of you for the encouragement... dropping fifty pounds is going to be a long haul.
I figure I'll take a year cutting out all the bad food habits and eating much smaller portions. Four pounds a month is not too crazy, is it?
Yesterday -
I cooked pork filet with a half a cauliflower and used a little chicken soup as a gravy. Otherwise no crap except for a few bits of Oka cheese on toast later in the day... then the boychild asked for a pizza later in the evening and I said "No" and cooked him the other half of the pork filet with two mashed potatoes and he scarfed it down and was happy...
Another 2 litres of water and only one coffee in the morning...
as you can see I'm boasting and proud of my "iron" will!
Daily Llama,
At least he helps to clean up after :).
Keep on working on eating healthy and cooking at home, it will help to keep your mood positive too!
